- Motorola Invests in Annapolis-based Zephyr Technology

Annapolis -- Zephyr Technology, a maker of fabric sensors used in physiological and biomechanical monitoring, has received an investment from Motorola Ventures, the venture capital arm of Motorola.Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed. Zephyr's patent-pending Smart Fabric technology, combines fabric-based sensors with algorithms and electronics for monitoring applications in research, sports, defense, first responder and healthcare. The solution monitors conditions such heat state, dehydration or injury by measuring vital signs including heart rate, breathing rate, skin temperature, posture and activity.

- Battelle Wins $29 Million Five-year Homeland Security Contract

Aberdeen -- Battelle said that it was one of two companies awarded an potential $94 million contract with Homeland Security. The initial contract to Battelle was $29 million over a five-year period. Under the contract, Battelle will support all Homeland Security National Infrastructure Coordination Center (NICC) Watch locations and the Office of Infrastructure Protection Incident Management Cell. The NICC is the round-the-clock watch mechanism through which the National Operations Center (NOC) maintains contact and exchanges information with the agencies and people responsible for protecting key resources and critical infrastructure.

- AVIcode Lands Funding from Southern Capital Ventures

Baltimore -- AVIcode, a developer of application monitoring software, has landed a second round of funding from Raleigh, NC-based Southern Capital Ventures. Financial terms were not disclosed. AVIcode is already backed with about $2 million in investment. AVIcode plans on using the funds to grow its sales and marketing and develop new products. AVIcode is used to crashes and software bugs on applications developed on Microsoft’s .NET platform.

- Baltimore Technology Park Selects FiberLight for Ethernet to VA

Baltimore -- Baltimore Technology Park (BTP) has selected FiberLight, an optical transport solution provider, to provide secure Ethernet capacity to connect BTP’s data center with Greater Baltimore’s Business District and the Equinix Data Center Service Facility in Ashburn, VA. Equinix is considered one of the largest IP Peering locations on the East Coast. FiberLight’s Ethernet offering will provide BTP clients with a direct, affordable, low-latency route to Equinix. The connection will provide speeds up to 10 Gig.

- Global IntelliSystems Releases New API

Frederick -- Global IntelliSystems, an email service provider (ESP), has released a new Application Programming Interface (API) for its solutions. The API can be used by Global's customers to launch and access in-house campaigns through the Global IntelliSystems Service. Any company can now create its own front-end service or whitelist its own product using the Global IntelliSystems email marketing platform. The API facilitates complete mailing list management, campaign uploads/launches and detailed delivery reporting services.

- BDMetrics Partners Ads Maps from Prism Technologies

Baltimore -- BDMetrics reported last week that its event-planning portals now feature event, facility and area maps powered by Prism Technologies. Using the Prism solution event attendees can create personal itineraries and walking maps. The Prism Technologies solution enables attendees to map key locations within and around the exhibit hall – including exhibitor booths, session rooms, area attractions and more.

- GTS Central Europe Taps Ciena for Carrier Ethernet

Linthicum -- Ciena last week said that it has been awarded a contract with GTS Central Europe (GTS CE) for Ciena’s Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery solutions. GTS CE has deployed the platforms in its aggregation and access network layers to allow the operator to offer a broad range of carrier-class services. GTS CE boasts an extensive regional infrastructure across its primary countries of operation, which include Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. The operator provides fixed voice, data, IP, Ethernet, MPLS and DSL broadband services to business and residential customers.

- Tecore Supplies GSM Networks to Major Military Facilities

Columbia -- Tecore Networks, a supplier of mobile network solutions, reported last week that it has supplied complete GSM communications systems including core and radio access networks for multiple major military facilities. Tecore made the delivery in collaboration with a Tier 1 defense contractor. The systems included equipment, system integration, and installation, commissioning, acceptance testing and training services.
