- Vorbeck Materials Receives $5.1 Million Financing
Jessup -- Vorbeck Materials, a developer and manufacturer of solutions using graphene, reported last week that it has received $5.1 million in funding. The financing was led by Stoneham Partners, with contributions from the Maryland Department for Business and Economic Development (DBED) and a syndicate of individual investors. The company will use the funds to expand development of its Vor-x graphene and Vor-ink conductive inks for printed electronics applications. In conjunction with the funding the Honorable Kristen L. Silverberg, former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, and Dr. Robert G. Hirsch, former Global Managing Director for DuPont’s Intellectual Assets Business and Corporate New Ventures have joined Vorbeck's board.

- Sourcefire Integrates with Security Solution from Qualys
Columbia -- Sourcefire reported last week that it has integrated its Sourcefire 3D System with QualysGuard from Qualys, a CA-based provider of security risk and compliance management solutions. Sourcefire said that the combination of the two solutions enables organizations to reduce the number of actionable network threats.The integration provides customers with the ability to import QualysGuard scan data into the Sourcefire RNA host database.

- MPT Issues Monitoring and Control Contract to Statmon Technologies
Owings Mills -- Maryland Public Television (MPT) has selected Chicago-based Statmon Technologies to provide MPT with a transmission systems monitoring and control project. - Ciena Equipment Used in Clearwire’s WiMAX Service in Las Vegas
Linthicum -- Ciena reported last week that its Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery (CESD) platforms are providing the backhaul solution for Clearwire’s CLEAR 4G mobile WiMAX service in Las Vegas. Clearwire is launching a nationwide WiMAX service with the Ciena equipment with deployments already in Baltimore, Atlanta and Portland. In Las Vegas, the service is available to 1.7 million people across 638 square miles. WiMAX typically offers download speeds of 3 to 6 Mbps, significantly more than today’s wireless broadband data services.

- Urban Outfitters Selects Merkle for Database Services
Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing agency, announced last week that it has been selected by Urban Outfitters to provide database services. - Merkle Launches Mobile Marketing Practice
Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing firm, said that it has formed a new mobile marketing practice that will focus on developing mobile campaigns for clients across a wide range of vertical markets. Merkle said it is formalizing its new practice in response to skyrocketing interest in mobile marketing, which is expected to grow to $5.7 billion by the year 2014. Mike Ricci will head the new practice. Ricci joins Merkle from iLoop Mobile, where he oversaw mobile campaigns for clients such as Sony, Paramount, Coca-Cola, Western Union, The Weather Channel and Lexus.

The research project will be jointly conducted by PCTEST Lab and by The Center for Risk and Reliability at the University of Maryland. The goal of the project is to improves the safety and reliability of lithium batteries used in mobile devices. The MIPS program helps commercialize technology in Maryland by jointly funding collaborative R&D projects between companies and University System of Maryland faculty.

- BGE Announces Plans for Installing 2 Million Smart Meters
Baltimore -- Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) said last week that it has filed a plan with the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) to install as many as 2 million smart meters, after the success of its pilot program it started last year. BGE claims the program, which is based on a two-way communications network, will save customers as much as $2.6 billion over the life of the project. The pilot program proved that customers can reduce electricity usage by about a third during peak periods. BGE is planning on using stimulus dollars to help fund the project. Participating residential customers reduced their consumption during peak periods by 26 percent to 37 percent, saved more than $100 on average and gave the program a 93 percent satisfaction rating.

- Hopkins HealthCare Selects HealthTrio Solutions
Laurel -- HealthTrio, a health services IT provider, reported last week that Johns Hopkins HealthCare (JHHC) will use HealthTrio to give members and providers greater access to patient and administrative health data. JHHC will use HealthTrio connect and HealthTrio personal health record (PHR) / electronic health record (EHR) solutions. The HealthTrio-powered Hopkins portal will be available across all of the Johns Hopkins HealthCare sites including JHHC, Employer Health Programs (EHP), Priority Partners (PP), and US Family Health Plan at Johns Hopkins (USFHP).

- Merkle’s CognitiveDATA to Acquire CMS Direct
Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing agency, announced last week that its wholly owned subsidiary CognitiveDATA is acquiring the Minneapolis-based catalog marketing services firm CMS Direct. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. CognitiveDATA and CMS Direct began a strategic partnership in 2006 to develop technology that combines address hygiene and advanced merge-purge services into a single, streamlined process. The merger will enable CognitiveDATA to completely integrate its proprietary data accuracy technology with the database and list processing solutions offered by CMS Direct.

- SafeNet Appoints Mark A. Floyd Chief Executive Officer
Belcamp -- SafeNet, a provider of information security, announced that Mr. Mark A. Floyd has joined SafeNet as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).The position had been vacant since October of 2006. Sykesville -- GSE Systems said that it has received new contracts totaling over $5 million of new work in its nuclear and non nuclear simulation business sectors. The nuclear awards are for major upgrades to existing simulators in the US and Mexico. The non-nuclear awards are for both new and existing fossil fueled plants located in the US and the UK.

- MAGPI Deploys Ciena to Networking Links for Federal Research Labs
Linthicum -- Ciena reported last week that MAGPI (Mid-Atlantic Gigapop for Internet2), an Information Systems and Computing organization at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, has implemented a network based on the CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform. The system supports MAGPI's high performance network connectivity among multiple research labs located at Princeton University and the U.S. Department of Energy. Ciena’s CN 4200 has increased network capacity and collaborative research capabilities for the labs, including the DOE’s Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and Princeton’s High Energy Physics Group.

- Monster Diesel Launches New Website and Social Media
Lutherville -- Alkane, a maker of an alternative diesel fuel additive, Monster Diesel, said that it has launched a renovated website and has setup social media tools Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace. The newly launched website lets users purchase products online, while the social networking sites will be utilized as a means to invite conversation on the company's ongoing alternative energy product innovations.

- Arbitron Says its Ready to Work With Congress on PPM Impact
Columbia -- Arbitron has issued a statement saying that it welcomes discussion with Congress on the impact of the introduction of the Portable People Meter (PPM) on radio listening estimates. The statement was issued in response to interest from Congress on investigating the use of the devices. The PPM electronic measurement service is currently used in markets to gather detailed information on radio listening habits.

- Census Bureau Opens Data Processing Center in Essex
Essex -- The U.S. Census Bureau and Lockheed Martin have opened a new facility in Baltimore County, to support the data processing efforts required for the 2010 Census. More than 2,500 people will work in the 236,500-square-foot facility in Essex. They will be supporting a broad spectrum of services related to 2010 Census data processing efforts. The facility will be operated by Lockheed Martin's subcontract partner, CSC, who will also manage the hiring efforts for the 2,500 new employees.
