- DuraBante To Become Swift Software's Implementation Arm

Baltimore -- Swift Software said that it has reached an agreement with DuraBante for DuraBante to become the implementation arm of Swift for its JobTraQ project management software. The companies said that the combination works because each is a specialist in their own area, resulting in improved services to its customers.

- Merkle Launches Mobile Marketing Practice

Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing firm, said that it has formed a new mobile marketing practice that will focus on developing mobile campaigns for clients across a wide range of vertical markets. Merkle said it is formalizing its new practice in response to skyrocketing interest in mobile marketing, which is expected to grow to $5.7 billion by the year 2014. Mike Ricci will head the new practice. Ricci joins Merkle from iLoop Mobile, where he oversaw mobile campaigns for clients such as Sony, Paramount, Coca-Cola, Western Union, The Weather Channel and Lexus.

- Indianapolis-based Delivra Selects Message Systems Momentum

Columbia -- Message Systems, a provider of message management solutions, reported last week that Delivra, an email marketing service provider, has selected Message Systems’ Momentum platform. Based in Indiana, Delivra enables marketers to create, send and track e-newsletters, surveys and announcements. Delivra selected the Momentum in order to scale for current and future growth as well as provide the flexibility its customers need.

- PCTEST Receives Maryland Industrial Partnerships Award

Columbia -- PCTEST Engineering Laboratory, a testing laboratory of consumer electronics and wireless devices, said that it has received the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) award to research a smart thermal management platform for lithium batteries. The research project will be jointly conducted by PCTEST Lab and by The Center for Risk and Reliability at the University of Maryland. The goal of the project is to improves the safety and reliability of lithium batteries used in mobile devices. The MIPS program helps commercialize technology in Maryland by jointly funding collaborative R&D projects between companies and University System of Maryland faculty.

- BGE Announces Plans for Installing 2 Million Smart Meters

Baltimore -- Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) said last week that it has filed a plan with the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) to install as many as 2 million smart meters, after the success of its pilot program it started last year. BGE claims the program, which is based on a two-way communications network, will save customers as much as $2.6 billion over the life of the project. The pilot program proved that customers can reduce electricity usage by about a third during peak periods. BGE is planning on using stimulus dollars to help fund the project. Participating residential customers reduced their consumption during peak periods by 26 percent to 37 percent, saved more than $100 on average and gave the program a 93 percent satisfaction rating.

- Sourcefire Hires Chris Peterson as VP of Worldwide Channel Sales

Columbia -- Sourcefire reported last week that it has hired Chris Peterson as VP of Worldwide Channel Sales. He'll lead the company's indirect sales effort. Most recently, Peterson worked as the VP of Worldwide Alliance and Channel Sales at ArcSight where he directed all aspects of the global channels and alliances. Peterson previously oversaw global channel initiatives for Secure Computing and Network Associates.
