- SafeNet Opens Office in Dubai UAE
Baltimore -- SafeNet last week announced that it has opened a new office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. SafeNet says it has more than 25,000 customers in 100 countries. Its hardware security modules (HSMs) are being used by Middle East governments for securing national identity solutions and many banks in the Middle-East and African region use SafeNet HSMs for secure financial transactions.

- Tecore Integrates 3G Radio Network Controller
Columbia -- Tecore Networks, a supplier of mobile network infrastructure, reported that it has integrated a 3G Radio Network Controller (RNC) with its all-IP multi-technology core network. The RNC enhances support for 3G services. Rural and emerging mobile network operators can optimize total cost of ownership by avoiding the expense of separate RNCs.

- BDMetrics Launches Social Networking for Events
Baltimore -- BDMetrics has launched eventSocial, an online networking platform for tradeshows, conferences and events. eventSocial matches attendees’ selected social, professional and email networks to the event’s registration database. Attendees can in turn send invitations to attend and/or meet at the show directly to their contacts from the eventSocial interface. IN its first use at DMA09, 687 attendees sent 3,265 invitations to attend DMA09 via eventSocial.

- Avatech Solutions Promotes Lawrence Rychlak to President
Baltimore -- Avatech Solutions, a developer and distributor of engineering solutions, has promoted Lawrence Rychlak to President. Mr. Rychlak will retain the position of CFO and George Davis will remain as CEO. Mr. Rychlak, 53, has been with Avatech Solutions since May 2005. - BWI Checked Baggage Screening System to get $3.2 Million Upgrade
Baltimore -- The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced an award of approximately $3.2 million to BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) for enhancements to optimize their baggage handling systems. The upgrades will provide upgrades to the existing baggage systems by adding conveyor lines and constructing new spaces to perform screening. More than 20 million passengers travel through BWI each year.

Baltimore -- View Systems, a homeland defense solutions provider, reported last week that it received a contract to install video surveillance systems at all of Maryland's 18 Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) locations. - Ciena to Acquire Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Networks Business
Lintnicum -- Ciena, announced last week that it has signed an agreement to purchase substantially all of the optical networking and carrier Ethernet assets of Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) business. The deal will be for $390 million in cash and 10 million shares of Ciena common stock. The product and technology assets to be acquired include Nortel’s long-haul optical transport portfolio; metro optical Ethernet switching and transport solutions; Ethernet transport, aggregation and switching technology; multiservice SONET/SDH product families; and network management software products. The proposed transaction would strengthen Ciena’s global presence and bring together complementary technologies in switching and transport that will offer customers a practical path for transitioning to automated, optical Ethernet-based networking. The assets to be acquired generated approximately $1.36 billion in revenue for Nortel in 2008.

- Aquilent Wins $4 Million DOT Web Development Contract
Laurel -- Aquilent, a developer of web-based solutions for the federal government, said that it was selected by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to develop a web and content management system (CMS) for the DOT website. The contract is valued at a total of more than $4 million, with a one year base plus three years. Under the contract, Aquilent will support DOT with web design and development – including requirements analysis, information architecture, usability testing, visual design and branding, and Microsoft SharePoint integration.

- TeleCommunication Systems Receives $1.8 Million Army Order
Annapolis -- TeleCommunication Systems, a provider of wireless communications, last week said that it has received a $1.8 million contract from the U.S. Army. This award covers the upgrade of the Army's second existing X-Band earth terminal in support of the Interoperability Command in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The upgrade will improve the terminal's performance, increase capacity and expand capability and will align this second terminal's overall technological state with that of the first X-Band terminal, which TCS upgraded earlier this year.

Baltimore -- Arginetix announced last week that it has raised $10.75 million in its first funding. The company is developing small molecule inhibitors of the enzyme arginase for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis and asthma. The financing was co-led by Quaker BioVentures and MedImmune Ventures.
