- Ciena to Acquire Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Networks Business

Lintnicum -- Ciena, announced last week that it has signed an agreement to purchase substantially all of the optical networking and carrier Ethernet assets of Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) business. The deal will be for $390 million in cash and 10 million shares of Ciena common stock. The product and technology assets to be acquired include Nortel’s long-haul optical transport portfolio; metro optical Ethernet switching and transport solutions; Ethernet transport, aggregation and switching technology; multiservice SONET/SDH product families; and network management software products. The proposed transaction would strengthen Ciena’s global presence and bring together complementary technologies in switching and transport that will offer customers a practical path for transitioning to automated, optical Ethernet-based networking. The assets to be acquired generated approximately $1.36 billion in revenue for Nortel in 2008.

- Aquilent Wins $4 Million DOT Web Development Contract

Laurel -- Aquilent, a developer of web-based solutions for the federal government, said that it was selected by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to develop a web and content management system (CMS) for the DOT website. The contract is valued at a total of more than $4 million, with a one year base plus three years. Under the contract, Aquilent will support DOT with web design and development – including requirements analysis, information architecture, usability testing, visual design and branding, and Microsoft SharePoint integration.

- TeleCommunication Systems Receives $1.8 Million Army Order

Annapolis -- TeleCommunication Systems, a provider of wireless communications, last week said that it has received a $1.8 million contract from the U.S. Army. This award covers the upgrade of the Army's second existing X-Band earth terminal in support of the Interoperability Command in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The upgrade will improve the terminal's performance, increase capacity and expand capability and will align this second terminal's overall technological state with that of the first X-Band terminal, which TCS upgraded earlier this year.

- McAfee Names AirPatrol the 2009 Most Innovative Partner

Columbia -- AirPatrol, a mobile threat management solutions company, reported last week that McAfee has named AirPatrol the 2009 Security Innovation Alliance Most Innovative Partner. “AirPatrol Corporation is most clearly leveraging the power of McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator through their integration of their Wireless Policy Manager, and we expect that our joint solution will stimulate powerful new workflows for security and compliance, an important goal of the SIA program,” said Ed Barry, senior director of the Security Innovation Alliance, McAfee.

- Prism Microsystems Named Finalist in Homeland Security Awards

Columbia -- Prism Microsystems, a developer of security incident and event log management solutions, has been named a finalist in the 1st annual homeland security awards by GSN (Government Security News) Magazine. The selection came from a panel of judges comprised of industry experts from think tanks, non-profit organizations, academia and government.

Edgewood -- Smiths Detection said last week that it has signed an exclusive worldwide agreement with GenPrime to distribute its early screening bio-threat detection system, Prime Alert. Prime Alert is a portable detection system that determines the presence of potentially life-threatening microbes such as anthrax and plague as well as bio-toxins such as ricin and botulinum by providing a highly-accurate broad-spectrum analysis.

Columbia -- MICROS Systems reported last week that Burger King Restaurants of Canada is deploying the full MICROS RES point-of-sale (POS) suite, in conjunction with mymicros.net, and mylabor, in all of its corporate locations in English speaking Canada. Burger King Canada has 78 company-owned restaurants.
