- Martek Announces Agreement to Purchase Amerifit Brands
Columbia -- Martek Biosciences reported that it will acquire Amerifit Brands, a consumer health and wellness company, from Charterhouse Group. The all cash deal will be about $200 million. Amerifit develops, markets and distributes branded consumer health and wellness products focused on women's and digestive health benefits. Amerifit's key products include: Culturelle, a probiotic supplement; AZO, for relief, detection and prevention of urinary tract infections; and ESTROVEN, an all-natural nutritional supplement addressing the symptoms of menopause.

- Prometric Signs Testing Contract with Am. Board of Pediatrics
Baltimore -- Prometric reported last week that the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) has committed to a new, long-term contract for worldwide delivery of its physician certification and maintenance of certification examinations via the Prometric network. Also as part of the new contract, ABP’s general certification and subspecialty certification exams will be converted from paper and pencil to computerized format and newly available in Prometric’s global test center network in the coming years.

- Univ of Maine System Selects Ciena for Regional Backbone Network
Linthicum -- Ciena announced that the University of Maine System (UMS) has deployed its CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform. The network spans nearly 300 miles from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Cambridge, Mass. The network was deployed and is managed by UMS to provide a direct connection to Internet2 for northern New England and connectivity services for its own campuses, the State of Maine government, K-12 schools, libraries, other colleges and universities, and research institutions.

Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing agency, has promoted Craig Dempster to the newly formed role of executive VP and chief marketing officer. Baltimore -- St. Louis-based World Wide Technology, a systems integrator, has acquired Baltimore-based Performance Technology Group (PTG). PTG specializes in systems engineering and managed services for Federal, State and Commercial clients. The acquisition strengthens WWT's presence in the Mid-Atlantic. The combined companies will have more than 1,200 employees and revenue approaching $3 billion.

- SafeNet Launches License Security in Virtual Environments
Baltimore -- SafeNet, an information security solutions provider, has launched a new solution for software license authorization and enforcement on virtual machines (VMs). The new solution will enable software vendors to introduce licensing and pricing models that support and control the utilization of their application in virtual environments. This month SafeNet will begin rolling out VM binding support across its Sentinel product lines. Vendors will be able to bind a license to a single VM, just as they would in a traditional licensing scenario.

- General Physics Acquires PerformTech
Elkridge -- General Physics has acquired PerformTech, a provider of custom courseware development and other training services primarily for the U.S. government. GP anticipates that PerformTech will have revenue of approximately $15 million for the year ending December 31, 2009. Although the term of the deal were not announced, GP utilized a portion of the net proceeds of the $20,000,000 private placement by Sagard Capital Partners to make the acquisition. PerformTech, located in Alexandria, Virginia, is a developer of custom training solutions supporting federal government priorities including border security, anti-terrorism, and highway engineering. The acquisition expands GP's position within federal government programs, such as the GoLearn program and first responder training.

The upgrade gives the network additional capacity, optical protection switching for resiliency against accidental fiber cuts and the ability to offer SONET, Ethernet, storage and digital video services via programmable ports. - General Physics Acquires PerformTech
Elkridge -- General Physics has acquired PerformTech, a provider of custom courseware development and other training services primarily for the U.S. government. GP anticipates that PerformTech will have revenue of approximately $15 million for the year ending December 31, 2009. Although the term of the deal were not announced, GP utilized a portion of the net proceeds of the $20,000,000 private placement by Sagard Capital Partners to make the acquisition. PerformTech, located in Alexandria, Virginia, is a developer of custom training solutions supporting federal government priorities including border security, anti-terrorism, and highway engineering. The acquisition expands GP's position within federal government programs, such as the GoLearn program and first responder training.
