- AAI’s Command and Control Software Achieves TRL 7
Hunt Valley -- AAI reported last week that it had demonstrated its new On-the-Move Command and Control (OMCC) software during an Aerosonde Mark 4.7 unmanned aircraft system flight at Fort Pickett in Virginia. The OMCC software achieved technology readiness level, or TRL, 7 during this exercise by demonstrating its system-level operational capabilities in a full flight environment. OMCC was utilized by operators for pre-flight checks, automatic launch, executing mission plans and auto-recovery operations.

- Sourcefire 3D System Earns Intrusion Prevention Certification
Columbia -- Sourcefire announced that the Sourcefire 3D System has received network intrusion prevention system (IPS) certification from ICSA Labs, an independent division of Verizon Business. The Sourcefire 3D System product line helps its customers to detect and prevent emerging network threats. Certification is required by many IT departments who require independent, third-party testing and validation that security solutions meet specific security standards.

Aberdeen Proving Grounds -- Raytheon said that it has leased space for a new green building at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. - BlueHippo Files for Chapter 7 Liquidation
Woodlawn - The Baltimore Sun reported last week that BlueHippo has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation. The firm promised to help consumers finance the purchase of computers. The FTC slapped the company with contempt charges claiming that BlueHippo pocketed more than $15 million from consumers, but almost none received a computer. The contempt charges stemmed from a 2008 settlement with the FTC that required the company to pay $3.5 million for consumer redress and barred the defendants from further deceiving customers. BlueHippo had filed Chapter 11 Reorganization, but was forced to Chapter 7 when its payments processor blocked any payments to the Company.
- NEA Invest $8 Million in MA-based Epizyme
Baltimore -- New Enterprise Associates (NEA) has invested $8 million in Cambridge-based Epizyme, a biopharmaceutical company focused on epigenetics. Epizme has now raised $40 million in its second round funding, which was led by Bay City Capital. Epigenetic enzymes have been identified for their roles in various diseases including cancer, inflammatory conditions, metabolic disorders and neurological and psychiatric diseases. Epizyme is focusing on a specific class of epigenetic enzymes, the histone methyltransferases (HMTs), which represent a novel protein target class that has been associated with a variety of major diseases.

- GiftCardRescue.com Extends Bankruptcy Protection Policy
Ellicott City -- GiftCardRescue.com, a gift card exchange Web site, last week said that it is extending its Bankruptcy Protection Policy through March 31, 2010. If a merchant files for bankruptcy, the policy assures customers they will be reimbursed for any loss encountered on purchased gift cards, as long as the retailer no longer honors gift cards.

- BWI Expands FlightView to Website
Baltimore -- BWI Airport has expanded its FlightView service to its website. Deployed throughout the airport, FlightView flight tracking displays help travelers get real-time updates on flight arrivals and departures. Now the service is also available on the BWI website. BWI serves more than 55,000 passengers on more than 675 flights daily.

Baltimore -- US Lacrosse and NJ-based Massive Creative announced that Massive Playbook will release US Lacrosse Playbook. The playbook is free email communications platform that allows coaches and program administrators to communicate with their teams and leagues and to raise money with a local advertising based revenue sharing model. The service will be offered free to all members of US Lacrosse. US Lacrosse, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, is the national governing body for men's and women's lacrosse and has more than 300,000 members.

Columbia -- AirPatrol, a developer of mobile and wireless threat management solutions, said that Brendan Gray has joined its Advisory Board. Retired from the Navy after thirty years, Gray served as the Deputy Commander for Navy Region Europe. He was responsible for the day-to-day operations, security, and force protection, of the nine Navy bases across five countries in Europe.Currently, Gray is VP of operations for Interactive Data Corporation (IDC). Annapolis -- TeleCommunication Systems, a provider of mission-critical wireless communications, reported that it has reach agreement to acquire CA-based Networks In Motion for $170 million in cash, TCS common stock and promissory notes. The acquisition accelerates TCS' position in enabling mobile operators to offer enhanced location-based data services. Millions of wireless users worldwide have used Networks In Motion's mobile services. Network in Motion provides turn-by-turn navigation on cell phones to customers in 38 countries, and in 10 languages.

The service will help wireless operators to offer next-generation communications services anywhere in the world. Baltimore -- NEA has led an investment of $43 million in CA-based Playdom, a social gaming developer. Other investors include Playdom chairman Rick Thompson, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Norwest Venture Partners (NVP). The funds will be used to finance strategic acquisitions and expand the company’s pipeline of games. In conjunction with the financing, Playdom has added Scott Sandell, general partner at NEA, to its Board of Directors. Playdom currently runs 13 games on leading social networking platforms including Facebook, MySpace and iPhone and employees 190.

- Mid-Atlantic Governors Commit To Offshore Wind Partnership
Annapolis – The governors of Maryland, Virginia and Delaware have formed a tri-state partnership to promote off shore wind energy in the Mid-Atlantic coastal region. The three states signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) creating a formal partnership that will build on the region’s significant offshore wind resources to generate renewable energy from wind. Under the MOU the states will work together to identify common transmission strategies for offshore wind energy deployment, discuss ways to encourage sustainable market demand and work collaboratively in pursuing federal energy policies which help advance offshore wind in the Mid-Atlantic area.

Annapolis -- TeleCommunication Systems, a provider of wireless services, reported last week that it has acquired Baltimore County-based Solvern Innovations. Solvern has about 100 employees and specializes in cyber security training, and technology services for the Department of Defense and the intelligence community. Although exact terms were not provided, the sale included cash, approximately one million shares of TCS common stock, and contingent consideration based on the business's gross profit in 2010 and 2011. The acquisition of Solvern extends TCS' core competency in secure network communications and encryption.

Annapolis -- TeleCommunication Systems, a provider of wireless services, reported last week that it has acquired Baltimore County-based Solvern Innovations. Solvern has about 100 employees and specializes in cyber security training, and technology services for the Department of Defense and the intelligence community. Although exact terms were not provided, the sale included cash, approximately one million shares of TCS common stock, and contingent consideration based on the business's gross profit in 2010 and 2011. The acquisition of Solvern extends TCS' core competency in secure network communications and encryption.

- Polygon Software Receives Gartner's Highest Rating

- Project Lead The Way Selects Prometric for Testing and Research
Baltimore -- Prometric, a global provider of testing services, last week said that it was selected by Project Lead The Way (PLTW) to deliver online assessments to all 200,000 PLTW high school students in the 2009-2010 academic year. PLTW is a provider of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education programs. Prometric will also conduct research to gain new insight into how students learn and improve in STEM-related studies. The research side of the contract will focus on tracking the migration of students from middle school to high school to post secondary studies and will provide PLTW with the opportunity to breakdown data into specific demographic categories.

Lintnicum -- Ciena, announced last week that it has signed an agreement to purchase substantially all of the optical networking and carrier Ethernet assets of Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) business. The deal will be for $390 million in cash and 10 million shares of Ciena common stock. Lintnicum -- Ciena, announced last week that it has signed an agreement to purchase substantially all of the optical networking and carrier Ethernet assets of Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) business. The deal will be for $390 million in cash and 10 million shares of Ciena common stock. The company is developing small molecule inhibitors of the enzyme arginase for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis and asthma. The financing was co-led by Quaker BioVentures and MedImmune Ventures. Maryland Health Care Product Development, Osage University Partners, Red Abbey Venture Partners, and company co-founder Acidophil LLC also participated in the round. Sykesville -- GSE Systems, a provider of simulation solutions to the power industry, said that its underwriter exercised an over-allotment option in full to purchase an additional 375,000 shares of the Company’s common stock at $6.00 per share. As a result of the exercise of the option, GSE will add another $2.25 million in funds from its recent offering raising its net proceeds to $15.9 million. Roth Capital Partners acted as the sole underwriter of the offering.

- AirVersent Certifies Psion Teklogix Rugged Handheld Computers
Owings Mills -- AirVersent, a developer of mobile supply chain solutions, reported that Ontario-based Psion Teklogix, has integrated and passed certification of AirVersent’s 20/20 Delivery mobile supply chain software with Psion Teklogix’s rugged handheld computers. Columbia -- Prism Microsystems last week announced that its security information and event log management solution, EventTracker, is in evaluation for EAL 2+ certification under Communications Security Establishment Canada’s (CSEC) Common Criteria Certification Scheme (CCS). CCS is recognized by 25 countries, which mandates federal agencies to procure only those commercial security products that have been tested by an accredited laboratory. EventTracker has already cleared the first, pre-evaluation stage of the certification process and has now advanced to the “in evaluation” stage.

- Integral Systems to Provide Ground Systems for ST-2 Program
Columbia -- Integral Systems last week said that it will provide satellite ground systems for the ST-2 telecommunications satellite. Singapore Telecommunications and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Company formed a joint venture to build the ST-2 satellite.Integral Systems will provide its EPOCH Integrated Product Suite (IPS) to manage two complete Satellite Control Centers (SCCs). In addition, Integral will also provide baseband Telemetry, Tracking, and Control (TT&C) hardware. The primary control center will be located in Singapore, with a back-up SCC and remote payload control center installed in Taiwan.

Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing agency, reported that it has formed a new business called LogicLab. LogicLab will focus on applying data-driven marketing to the media buying process of evaluating, optimizing and purchasing advertising. - Maryland Public Television Cuts Staff by 10%
Owings Mills -- Maryland Public Television (MPT) last week said that it is reducing its staff by approximately 10 percent to prevent a current-year budget shortfall. MPT said its eliminating 18 positions held by employees at all levels of the organization. Prior to resorting to staff reductions, station officials cut non-essential expenses and froze salaries for FY10 to avoid a shortfall. Additionally, MPT employees will be furloughed in accordance with the State's recently enacted furlough plan. MPT earns two thirds of its budget through individual membership and corporate support while receiving one-third of its funding from the State of Maryland. Like many other public broadcasters, MPT has seen a drop in state appropriations and private donations.

- South River Technologies Releases WebDrive for Mac
Annapolis -- South River Technologies, a provider of file transfer software, announced last week that it has released WebDrive for the Macintosh platform. WebDrive for Mac enables Mac users to connect to remote servers as if they were mounted devices. WebDrive for Mac makes accessing remote files as easy as accessing files on a flash drive or on the local Mac computer. South River says its WebDrive software has been installed on over 5 million PCs.

- Merkle Launches Analytic Practices to Media Buying; Hires President
Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing agency, reported that it has formed a new business called LogicLab. LogicLab will focus on applying data-driven marketing to the media buying process of evaluating, optimizing and purchasing advertising. The new business will be lead by Christopher Wilson, who previously was the president of Experian Research Services. Earlier, Wilson served as president and COO at Simmons Research. The new business will help media buyers make advertising decisions with the detailed information to optimize advertising placements, access an expanded array of media options, and determine the return on investment.

- Texas Hospital Assoc Selects RWD as Provider of Lean Consulting Services
Catonsville -- RWD Technologies reported last week that the Texas Hospital Association (THA) has endorsed RWD as its vendor for its Toyota Management System based Performance Improvement Services. The selection was made after THA conducted a review and market assessment of the services and healthcare-specific offerings available from leading consulting companies. Using the endorsement, RWD will market its consulting capabilities to hospitals and healthcare systems that comprise the THA which includes about 85% of the state's healthcare workers.

Annapolis -- Netcordia, a developer of network management solutions, said that Hitachi Data Systems has integrated Netcordia’s NetMRI with Hitachi's IT Operations Analyzer. The combined solutions offer a mid-market integrated infrastructure monitoring and management solution for companies with 100 – 1500 devices, and limited staff and budget resources. - Carlson Chooses Zenoss Enterprise for Network Monitoring
Annapolis -- Zenoss announced last week that Carlson, a global group of companies providing hotel, restaurant and travel services, has deployed Zenoss Enterprise for its network monitoring. Zenoss Enterprise collects data from the company’s IT infrastructure and shares that with their capacity and planning tools. The solution was deployed in a week’s time. Carlson owns Radisson Hotels, T.G.I. Friday’s and Country Inns & Suites brands. Carlson was looking to insource its network monitoring in order to maintain Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance. This meant that they needed and agentless monitoring solution.

- Maryland Public Television Cuts Staff by 10%
Owings Mills -- Maryland Public Television (MPT) last week said that it is reducing its staff by approximately 10 percent to prevent a current-year budget shortfall. MPT said its eliminating 18 positions held by employees at all levels of the organization. Prior to resorting to staff reductions, station officials cut non-essential expenses and froze salaries for FY10 to avoid a shortfall. Additionally, MPT employees will be furloughed in accordance with the State's recently enacted furlough plan. MPT earns two thirds of its budget through individual membership and corporate support while receiving one-third of its funding from the State of Maryland. Like many other public broadcasters, MPT has seen a drop in state appropriations and private donations.

- AAI’s Unmanned Aircraft System Named as “Big 25” Technology
Hunt Valley -- AAI reported last week that its Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (TUAS) has been named one of the “Big 25” technologies of 2009 by C4ISR Journal, a defense trade publication. AAI’s Shadow unmanned aircraft systems are in service with the Army, National Guard, Army Special Forces and Marine Corps. They have accumulated more than 435,000 operational flight hours, the majority of which have taken place in Iraq and Afghanistan supporting America’s warfighters.

- Prometric Wins Multi-year Contract with European Personnel Office
Baltimore -- Prometric said that it has been awarded a new contract to be the exclusive partner of the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) over the next four years in the delivery of the EU staff selection examination process. Under the new contract, Prometric will work together with EPSO as it transforms existing employee selection processes for all positions in the Institutions of the European Union (EU). Prometric has delivered more than 120,000 exams for the EPSO through its network of test centers.

Columbia -- AirPatrol, a wireless threat management solutions company, said that it demonstrated how its Wireless Locator System (WLS) locates contraband cell phones to corrections officials from Maryland and several other states. WLS is used to yield real-time cell phone and Wi-Fi device location details throughout a correctional facility. The system gives correctional officers a graphical display of the locations of active cellular and Wi-Fi devices within their secure areas.

Baltimore -- SpotCrime said that it has signed deals with Fisher Communications and Capitol Broadcasting Company to provide local crime data to the public via broadcast stations owned by each company. Fisher Communications, based in Seattle, owns or manages 20 television stations and 8 radio stations. Capitol Broadcasting owns and/or operates television stations in North Carolina. SpotCrime says it does not selectively report or judge crimes and is the only company mapping crime that does not partner with local police departments.

- Prometric Wins Multi-year Contract with European Personnel Office
Baltimore -- Prometric said that it has been awarded a new contract to be the exclusive partner of the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) over the next four years in the delivery of the EU staff selection examination process. Under the new contract, Prometric will work together with EPSO as it transforms existing employee selection processes for all positions in the Institutions of the European Union (EU). Prometric has delivered more than 120,000 exams for the EPSO through its network of test centers.

Columbia -- AirPatrol, a wireless threat management solutions company, said that it demonstrated how its Wireless Locator System (WLS) locates contraband cell phones to corrections officials from Maryland and several other states. WLS is used to yield real-time cell phone and Wi-Fi device location details throughout a correctional facility. The system gives correctional officers a graphical display of the locations of active cellular and Wi-Fi devices within their secure areas.

Baltimore -- SpotCrime said that it has signed deals with Fisher Communications and Capitol Broadcasting Company to provide local crime data to the public via broadcast stations owned by each company. Fisher Communications, based in Seattle, owns or manages 20 television stations and 8 radio stations. Capitol Broadcasting owns and/or operates television stations in North Carolina. SpotCrime says it does not selectively report or judge crimes and is the only company mapping crime that does not partner with local police departments.

Belcamp -- SafeNet, last week announced that its USB-based eToken PRO 72K and eToken PRO Smartcard 72K authentication solutions received Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 2 and 3 certifications.
