- 38 Studios Acquires Big Huge Games

Timonium -- Shortly after announcing plans to shut down Timonium-based Big Huge Games, if it could not find a buyer, THQ has sold the company to MA-based 38 Studios. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Big Huge Games was founded in 2000 by veteran game developers Brian Reynolds, Jason Coleman, Dave Inscore, and Tim Train. Award-winning lead designer Ken Rolston, a 25-year role-playing game designer and co-creator of Oblivion and Morrowind, is another vital and dynamic component in BHG's success. 38 Studios was founded by former Red Sox pitcher Curt Shilling, who is Chairman. The Big Huge Games team will be integrated into 38 Studios but remain based in Timonium.

- Alabanza Acquirer Settles Class-action Lawsuit

Baltimore -- An article in the Daily News Record reported that NaviSite, that company that acquired Baltimore-based Alabanza two years ago, has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit brought on by more than 5,500 of its clients who experienced long service interruptions as a result of a botched server migration. The settlement of $1.67 million, will refund clients four times their monthly bills. In addition to the refund checks, the Boca Raton law firm who handled the suit will be paid nearly a half million dollars. The trouble began on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, when NaviSite unplugged some of Alabanza’s servers and attempted to move them by truck to Massachusetts. Nearly 200,000 Web sites were affected.

- Rivers Casino Debuts in Pittsburgh with MICROS's HMS

Columbia -- MICROS Systems, a supplier of IT to the hospitality industry, reported that Rivers Casino has selected the MICROS 9700 Hospitality Management System (HMS) and other MICROS modules. Rivers Casino will go live with the complete solution in August 2009. The entertainment facility is in Pittsburgh near Heinz Field and PNC Park. It features 3,000 slot machines, five restaurants and entertainment.MICROS 9700 HMS was selected after its success was proven in a sister property, the Riverwalk Casino.

- Polygon Software Introduces Production Planning

Baltimore -- Polygon Software, a supplier of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions, said that it has launched PolyPM Production Planning. The new module, fully integrated with Polygon's ERP offering, enables sourcing and manufacturing businesses to easily view and schedule thousands of production orders from a graphical planning board. The solution optimizes production capacity and customer requirements to assist businesses with meeting production requirements at the lowest cost. - New Pay-as-you-go PR Agency, PR Flex, Launched in Baltimore

Baltimore -- PR Flex, a new on-demand provider of strategic public relations services, launched last week with a focus on serving the small and medium business market. The new firm operates in an on-demand basis, with pay-as-you-go pricing. Services include content development, media relations, social media and strategic communications counsel. The agency says it is already working with several clients including SpotCrime, a consumer-driven crime-mapping service; Night Moves, a provider of illumination technology to turn vehicle fleets into nighttime billboards; and FreePatentsOnline, a web-based patent search service.

- Microsoft Zune HD to Feature HD Radio

Columbia -- Microsoft announced that its next generation Zune HD device, due out in September 2009, will feature HD Radio technology from Columbia-based iBiquity Digital. The Zune HD will be the first portable media player to support HD radio. HD radio offer digital reception. Listeners will be able to hear HD2/HD3 multicast channels.

- RWD Releases New Version of uBenchmark

Catonsville -- RWD Technologies has released a new version of uBenchmark, a performance monitoring and management application that aggregates end user interactions with business applications. - University of Maryland Business School Quadruples Space in Baltimore

Baltimore -- The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business said that it has acquired new space at the University of Maryland BioPark in Baltimore. The Smith School signed a long-term lease to occupy 14,127 square feet in BioPark Two of the biomedical research park,, giving it more than four times its current space in Baltimore. The new space will include technology-equipped classrooms, team break-out rooms, staff offices, a conference room, a small computer lab and a lounge area. The school plans to use the space to expand its MBA programs and partnerships, and to include dedicated space for alumni offerings in Baltimore.

- Patrick Gallagher Joins Ciena Board of Directors

Linthicum -- Ciena announced that Patrick T. Gallagher, current Chairman of Ubiquisys Ltd., a leading developer and supplier of femtocells for the global 3G mobile wireless market, has been appointed to Ciena's Board of Directors. Mr. Gallagher also serves on the board of directors of Harmonic, a provider of broadcast and on-demand video delivery solutions, and Sollers JSC, a Russian automobile manufacturer and distributor. Previous experience included being Chairman of Macro 4 plc and Vice Chairman of Golden Telecom. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Warwick University.
