- ABS Capital Leads $16 Million Investment in Teachscape

Baltimore -- ABS Capital Partners, a later-stage investor, has led a series C funding of San Francisco-based Teachscape, a developer of outcomes-based professional development programs for educators.Phil Clough and Ralph Terkowitz, General Partners at ABS Capital will join the Company’s board of directors. “With the Obama administration squarely focused on teacher effectiveness as the primary lever to improve student learning, school districts are looking for innovative software solutions to help improve the quality of instruction in every classroom,” said Mark Atkinson, CEO of Teachscape. Teachscape provides video-based online professional learning resources and technology tools to align curriculum, instruction and assessment.

- Central MD Applies for $100M in Stimulus Funds for Fiber Network

Ellicott City -- The “One Maryland” group, led by Howard County, has submitted an application, known as the One Maryland Broadband (OMB), to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration for $100 million of federal stimulus money set-aside for fiber optic projects. Members of the group consists of all of the central Maryland counties: Baltimore, Howard, Anne Arundel, Harford, Carroll, Prince George’s, Montgomery and Frederick, plus Baltimore City and Annapolis. The project will create a fiber optic network interconnecting over 800 community institutions across central Maryland in one contiguous local government network across the State. The benefits of this interconnection are numerous and substantial, especially as they relate to sharing resources and knowledge among public schools, libraries and public safety entities.

- Systems Alliance Wins Authorization to Sell Sun Micro in Flordia

Sparks -- Systems Alliance, a regional systems integrator, said last week that it has won authorization to resell Sun Microsystems hardware, software and services to universities, teaching hospitals and other public-sector healthcare institutions in Flordia. In August, Systems Alliance also opened a new office in Naples, expanding its local presence. The agreement gives Systems Alliance the rights to offer Sun products at pre-negotiated Education discounted pricing.

- GiftCardRescue.com Named Semi-Finalist in Forbes Contest

Ellicott City -- GiftCardRescue.com, a gift card exchange Web site, said that it was named as a semi-finalist in the Forbes.com’s third annual “Boost Your Business” editorial contest. The “Boost Your Business” contest was designed to replicate the challenging process of raising money from professional investors, as well as to encourage entrepreneurs to think more critically and strategically about their businesses. In December 2009, one small company will be awarded $100,000 in capital funds. - Knotice Selects Message Systems to Enhance Messaging Infrastructure

Columbia -- Message Systems, a message management solutions provider, reported that it has been selected by Ohio-based Knotice, a provider of software for direct digital marketing, to enhance Knotice's on-demand messaging infrastructure. Knotice’s on-demand platform Concentri helps businesses manage their direct digital marketing functions through email, and over mobile devices. Knotice says the integration of the Message Systems solution will help customers save time and money, while improving the performance of their campaigns.

- UniStar Extends Nuclear Energy IT Platform with Accenture

Baltimore -- Accenture and UniStar Nuclear Energy (UNE) have extended their agreement to design, build, operate, and maintain the ‘Galaxy’ IT platform, capable of supporting the data needs of nuclear energy facilities. UNE is a strategic joint venture of Constellation Energy and EDF Group, Europe’s largest electric energy producer. UNE has proposed building a fleet of 1,600-megawatt U.S. EPR reactors. The concept of the Galaxy platform has been an integral part of the planning and potential development of the first of UNE’s proposed nuclear energy facilities in Calvert Cliffs, Maryland.

- Blue Sky Factory Receives Safe Harbor Recertification

Baltimore -- Blue Sky Factory, an email service provider (ESP), said that it has been recertified under the Department of Commerce's U.S.-European Union Safe Harbor framework and it also received certification to the U.S.-Swiss Safe Harbor Framework. "This certification demonstrates that Publicaster, our email marketing application, meets the rigorous privacy and data protection standards required to transfer data to and from EU countries," said Greg Cangialosi, CEO of Blue Sky Factory. The Safe Harbor framework establishes a privacy protection standard for transferring personal data between the European Union and non-E.U. nations.
