- Millennial Media Acquires San Francisco-based TapMetrics

Baltimore -- Millennial Media, a mobile advertising network, announced last week that it will acquire TapMetrics, a San Francisco-based mobile analytics firm, focused on application usage and behavior. TapMetrics software provides detailed analytics to enable developers better manage their application sales and revenue. "We are acquiring TapMetrics, because the company shares our approach to serve the needs of developers, regardless of mobile platform, said Michael Avon, Executive VP and CFO, Millennial Media. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

- Nuvo Changes Its Name to NV3 Technologies

Baltimore -- Nuvo announced today that it has changed its name to NV3 Technologies. “The new name reflects the fact that we are the only company that brings three key functions – cell phone charging kiosks, LCD screens for digital information displays (DID), and digital signage software – all under one roof,” explains NV3 Managing Partner Ryan Doak. NV3’s charging kiosks are capable of charging 95% of all mobile phones in 15 minutes or less. Beyond phone charging, NV3 kiosks can be used to carry dynamic multimedia messages and digital signage.

- Merritt Properties Launches Property Search App for iPhone

Baltimore -- Merritt Properties, a Mid-Atlantic commercial real estate developers, has launched a new commercial real estate application for the iPhone. It is available as a free download from the iTunes App Store. The app provides for customized commercial property search, property profiles, map & driving directions, forwarding to other devices. Merritt said it also plans to have the application available for both the Blackberry and Google Android operating systems.

- TeleCommunication Systems Awarded $1.2 Million Defense Contract

Annapolis -- TeleCommunication Systems said last week that it has received a one-year, $1.2 million contract from the Defense Information Technology Contracting Office (DITCO) to provide the U.S. Army Central Command (CENTCOM) with space segment for its satellite operations. The services include highly secure voice, video and data connectivity solutions between fixed sites and remote operations.

- Systems Alliance Releases New Version for SiteExecutive

Sparks -- Systems Alliance has released Enhancement Pack 7 for its SiteExecutive Web content management system. The new release adds support for Adobe ColdFusion 9 and Android-based smart phones. Other enhancements in the release include support for Firefox 3.6, new configuration options and performance and usability improvements.

- Sourcefire IPS Gets NSS Labs’ “Recommend” Rating

Columbia -- Sourcefire reported last week that its Sourcefire 3D4500 Sensor, part of the Sourcefire 3D System intrusion prevention family, achieved a “Recommend” rating in the latest Network Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Comparative Test Report from NSS Labs. Sourcefire is one of only three vendors recommended by NSS Labs, based on its testing of 15 products. NSS Labs found that when tuned the Sourcefire 3D System blocked more attacks than any other IPS tested. NSS Labs also determined that the 3D4500 Sensor performed closest to its advertised performance.

- View Systems Launches Uninhabited Area Wireless Monitor

Baltimore -- View Systems, a security and tele-data solutions provider, has launched the Mini Sim Cam. The device uses wireless communication to monitor uninhabited areas like foreclosed houses, storage spaces and vacation homes. It senses motion and sends text messages to a user's cell phone. The Mini Sim Cam runs on batteries and one configuration of the system can even send a photo of the intruder to the user's cell phone.

- Ruby Tuesday Selects MICROS App for Coupon Management

Columbia -- MICROS Systems reported last week that Ruby Tuesday, has expanded its enterprise solution with MICROS iCare for Coupon Management. Ruby Tuesday, a long-time MICROS customer, had outgrown its homegrown coupon management solution and needed a new solution to keep pace with its marketing requirement for rapid deployment of new coupon offers chain wide. The MICROS iCare solution offered the ability to deploy bulk coupon offers as well as create individual offers from a member database. Nearly 900 Ruby Tuesday restaurants operate worldwide.

- TidalTV Raises $16 Million in Series B Funding

Baltimore -- TidalTV, a video advertising supplier, reported last week that it has raised more than $16 million in recent funding led by Comcast Interactive Capital, as well as New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and Valhalla Partners. Chairman & CEO, Scott Ferber pioneered pay-for-performance Internet marketing through Advertising.com, an online advertising network he co-founded in 1998. With TidalTV, Ferber is applying complex optimization mathematics to the management and delivery of video advertising campaigns. Comcast Interactive Capital's Managing Director David Horowitz will join TidalTV's Board. The new funding will enable TidalTV to expand its development of advanced targeting and ad decisioning capabilities.

- Constellation Energy To Invest $90 Million in Solar Systems

Baltimore -- Constellation Energy said that it will invest $90 million in the development of commercial photovoltaic power systems. Building off of government renewable incentives, said the funds will be available for customer-sited solar installations of 500 kilowatts or larger which begin construction before mid-year 2010. The funds will enable Constellation Energy to finance, design, construct and own solar installations for customers and supply the power generated on-site to the customer. This structure makes it possible for customers to deploy on-site solar and meet sustainability goals without incurring upfront costs. Approximately $18 million of the capital commitment has already been committed to projects soon to begin development in Maryland and New Jersey.

Baltimore -- The Mid-Atlantic Venture Association (MAVA) announced that this year's Capital Connection ‘10 Conference will be held in May 19-20 in Baltimore. - Metastorm Opens Hong Kong Office, Hires Asia Director

Baltimore -- Metastorm, a developer of Business Process Management (BPM) software, said that it is opening a new office in Hong Kong and has hired Paul Watts as Director of Asia Operations. Metastorm already has a number of customers in the region including AKPK, Bank Of China, Chubb & Sons, SBB Mutual, Standard Chartered Bank, and Talisman Energy. Metastorm says the new office will be valuable in providing local support to its customers. Paul Watts joins Metastorm from TIBCO.

- Martek Announces Agreement to Purchase Amerifit Brands

Columbia -- Martek Biosciences reported that it will acquire Amerifit Brands, a consumer health and wellness company, from Charterhouse Group. The all cash deal will be about $200 million. Amerifit develops, markets and distributes branded consumer health and wellness products focused on women's and digestive health benefits. Elkridge -- General Physics has acquired PerformTech, a provider of custom courseware development and other training services primarily for the U.S. government. GP anticipates that PerformTech will have revenue of approximately $15 million for the year ending December 31, 2009. Although the term of the deal were not announced, GP utilized a portion of the net proceeds of the $20,000,000 private placement by Sagard Capital Partners to make the acquisition. PerformTech, located in Alexandria, Virginia, is a developer of custom training solutions supporting federal government priorities including border security, anti-terrorism, and highway engineering. The acquisition expands GP's position within federal government programs, such as the GoLearn program and first responder training.

- BlueHippo Files for Chapter 7 Liquidation

Woodlawn - The Baltimore Sun reported last week that BlueHippo has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation. The firm promised to help consumers finance the purchase of computers. The FTC slapped the company with contempt charges claiming that BlueHippo pocketed more than $15 million from consumers, but almost none received a computer. The contempt charges stemmed from a 2008 settlement with the FTC that required the company to pay $3.5 million for consumer redress and barred the defendants from further deceiving customers. BlueHippo had filed Chapter 11 Reorganization, but was forced to Chapter 7 when its payments processor blocked any payments to the Company.

- NEA Invest $8 Million in MA-based Epizyme

Baltimore -- New Enterprise Associates (NEA) has invested $8 million in Cambridge-based Epizyme, a biopharmaceutical company focused on epigenetics. Epizme has now raised $40 million in its second round funding, which was led by Bay City Capital. Epigenetic enzymes have been identified for their roles in various diseases including cancer, inflammatory conditions, metabolic disorders and neurological and psychiatric diseases. Epizyme is focusing on a specific class of epigenetic enzymes, the histone methyltransferases (HMTs), which represent a novel protein target class that has been associated with a variety of major diseases.

- GiftCardRescue.com Extends Bankruptcy Protection Policy

Ellicott City -- GiftCardRescue.com, a gift card exchange Web site, last week said that it is extending its Bankruptcy Protection Policy through March 31, 2010. If a merchant files for bankruptcy, the policy assures customers they will be reimbursed for any loss encountered on purchased gift cards, as long as the retailer no longer honors gift cards.

Baltimore -- US Lacrosse and NJ-based Massive Creative announced that Massive Playbook will release US Lacrosse Playbook. The service will be offered free to all members of US Lacrosse. Baltimore -- NEA has led an investment of $43 million in CA-based Playdom, a social gaming developer. Other investors include Playdom chairman Rick Thompson, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Norwest Venture Partners (NVP). The funds will be used to finance strategic acquisitions and expand the company’s pipeline of games. In conjunction with the financing, Playdom has added Scott Sandell, general partner at NEA, to its Board of Directors. Playdom currently runs 13 games on leading social networking platforms including Facebook, MySpace and iPhone and employees 190.

- Mid-Atlantic Governors Commit To Offshore Wind Partnership

Annapolis – The governors of Maryland, Virginia and Delaware have formed a tri-state partnership to promote off shore wind energy in the Mid-Atlantic coastal region. The three states signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) creating a formal partnership that will build on the region’s significant offshore wind resources to generate renewable energy from wind. Under the MOU the states will work together to identify common transmission strategies for offshore wind energy deployment, discuss ways to encourage sustainable market demand and work collaboratively in pursuing federal energy policies which help advance offshore wind in the Mid-Atlantic area.

Solvern has about 100 employees and specializes in cyber security training, and technology services for the Department of Defense and the intelligence community. Although exact terms were not provided, the sale included cash, approximately one million shares of TCS common stock, and contingent consideration based on the business's gross profit in 2010 and 2011. Baltimore -- The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced an award of approximately $3.2 million to BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) for enhancements to optimize their baggage handling systems. The upgrades will provide upgrades to the existing baggage systems by adding conveyor lines and constructing new spaces to perform screening. More than 20 million passengers travel through BWI each year.

- Ciena to Acquire Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Networks Business

Lintnicum -- Ciena, announced last week that it has signed an agreement to purchase substantially all of the optical networking and carrier Ethernet assets of Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) business. The deal will be for $390 million in cash and 10 million shares of Ciena common stock. The product and technology assets to be acquired include Nortel’s long-haul optical transport portfolio; metro optical Ethernet switching and transport solutions; Ethernet transport, aggregation and switching technology; multiservice SONET/SDH product families; and network management software products. The proposed transaction would strengthen Ciena’s global presence and bring together complementary technologies in switching and transport that will offer customers a practical path for transitioning to automated, optical Ethernet-based networking. The assets to be acquired generated approximately $1.36 billion in revenue for Nortel in 2008.

- Aquilent Wins $4 Million DOT Web Development Contract

Laurel -- Aquilent, a developer of web-based solutions for the federal government, said that it was selected by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to develop a web and content management system (CMS) for the DOT website. The contract is valued at a total of more than $4 million, with a one year base plus three years. Under the contract, Aquilent will support DOT with web design and development – including requirements analysis, information architecture, usability testing, visual design and branding, and Microsoft SharePoint integration.

Annapolis -- TeleCommunication Systems, a provider of wireless communications, last week said that it has received a $1.8 million contract from the U.S. Army. This award covers the upgrade of the Army's second existing X-Band earth terminal in support of the Interoperability Command in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The upgrade will improve the terminal's performance, increase capacity and expand capability and will align this second terminal's overall technological state with that of the first X-Band terminal, which TCS upgraded earlier this year.

The company is developing small molecule inhibitors of the enzyme arginase for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis and asthma. - GSE Raises $2.25M More from its Public Offering

Sykesville -- GSE Systems, a provider of simulation solutions to the power industry, said that its underwriter exercised an over-allotment option in full to purchase an additional 375,000 shares of the Company’s common stock at $6.00 per share. As a result of the exercise of the option, GSE will add another $2.25 million in funds from its recent offering raising its net proceeds to $15.9 million. Roth Capital Partners acted as the sole underwriter of the offering.

- AirVersent Certifies Psion Teklogix Rugged Handheld Computers

Owings Mills -- AirVersent, a developer of mobile supply chain solutions, reported that Ontario-based Psion Teklogix, has integrated and passed certification of AirVersent’s 20/20 Delivery mobile supply chain software with Psion Teklogix’s rugged handheld computers. The certification process included putting the handheld computers through 150 test cases. The 20/20 software is used for delivery, pickup, cross-dock and backhaul operations.

- EventTracker in Evaluation for Common Criteria EAL 2+

Columbia -- Prism Microsystems last week announced that its security information and event log management solution, EventTracker, is in evaluation for EAL 2+ certification under Communications Security Establishment Canada’s (CSEC) Common Criteria Certification Scheme (CCS). CCS is recognized by 25 countries, which mandates federal agencies to procure only those commercial security products that have been tested by an accredited laboratory. EventTracker has already cleared the first, pre-evaluation stage of the certification process and has now advanced to the “in evaluation” stage.

- Integral Systems to Provide Ground Systems for ST-2 Program

Columbia -- Integral Systems last week said that it will provide satellite ground systems for the ST-2 telecommunications satellite. Singapore Telecommunications and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Company formed a joint venture to build the ST-2 satellite.Integral Systems will provide its EPOCH Integrated Product Suite (IPS) to manage two complete Satellite Control Centers (SCCs). In addition, Integral will also provide baseband Telemetry, Tracking, and Control (TT&C) hardware. The primary control center will be located in Singapore, with a back-up SCC and remote payload control center installed in Taiwan.

Baltimore -- WhoGlue, a small social networking company, has sued Facebook for infringing a U.S. patent for methods of managing personal relationship data on the Internet. WhoGlue is seeking unspecified damages and an injunction to stop Facebook from using the technology on its Web site. The patent was awarded to WhoGlue in 2007.

- South River Technologies Releases WebDrive for Mac

Annapolis -- South River Technologies, a provider of file transfer software, announced last week that it has released WebDrive for the Macintosh platform. WebDrive for Mac enables Mac users to connect to remote servers as if they were mounted devices. WebDrive for Mac makes accessing remote files as easy as accessing files on a flash drive or on the local Mac computer. South River says its WebDrive software has been installed on over 5 million PCs.

- Merkle Launches Analytic Practices to Media Buying; Hires President

Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing agency, reported that it has formed a new business called LogicLab. LogicLab will focus on applying data-driven marketing to the media buying process of evaluating, optimizing and purchasing advertising. The new business will be lead by Christopher Wilson, who previously was the president of Experian Research Services. Earlier, Wilson served as president and COO at Simmons Research. The new business will help media buyers make advertising decisions with the detailed information to optimize advertising placements, access an expanded array of media options, and determine the return on investment.

Catonsville -- RWD Technologies reported last week that the Texas Hospital Association (THA) has endorsed RWD as its vendor for its Toyota Management System based Performance Improvement Services. - Maryland Public Television Cuts Staff by 10%

Owings Mills -- Maryland Public Television (MPT) last week said that it is reducing its staff by approximately 10 percent to prevent a current-year budget shortfall. MPT said its eliminating 18 positions held by employees at all levels of the organization. Prior to resorting to staff reductions, station officials cut non-essential expenses and froze salaries for FY10 to avoid a shortfall. Additionally, MPT employees will be furloughed in accordance with the State's recently enacted furlough plan. MPT earns two thirds of its budget through individual membership and corporate support while receiving one-third of its funding from the State of Maryland. Like many other public broadcasters, MPT has seen a drop in state appropriations and private donations.

Columbia -- Tenable Network Security has launched the Tenable Appliance, a browser-managed application that hosts various Tenable enterprise applications. The Tenable Appliance is available as either a virtual machine download or as a physical hardware appliance. - AAI’s Unmanned Aircraft System Named as “Big 25” Technology

Hunt Valley -- AAI reported last week that its Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (TUAS) has been named one of the “Big 25” technologies of 2009 by C4ISR Journal, a defense trade publication. AAI’s Shadow unmanned aircraft systems are in service with the Army, National Guard, Army Special Forces and Marine Corps. They have accumulated more than 435,000 operational flight hours, the majority of which have taken place in Iraq and Afghanistan supporting America’s warfighters.

- Prometric Wins Multi-year Contract with European Personnel Office

Baltimore -- Prometric said that it has been awarded a new contract to be the exclusive partner of the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) over the next four years in the delivery of the EU staff selection examination process. Under the new contract, Prometric will work together with EPSO as it transforms existing employee selection processes for all positions in the Institutions of the European Union (EU). Prometric has delivered more than 120,000 exams for the EPSO through its network of test centers.

Baltimore -- SpotCrime said that it has signed deals with Fisher Communications and Capitol Broadcasting Company to provide local crime data to the public via broadcast stations owned by each company. Fisher Communications, based in Seattle, owns or manages 20 television stations and 8 radio stations. Capitol Broadcasting owns and/or operates television stations in North Carolina. - Pyxis Engineering Acquired by Applied Signal Technology

Eldersburg -- Pyxis Engineering, an Eldersburg-based systems engineering firm to the Department of Defense and intelligence community, has been acquired by CA-based Applied Signal Technology, a provider of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) solutions. The deal worth up to $20 million includes an initial payment of $16.25 million in cash with a potential earn-out of an additional $3.75 million. Pyxis had approximately $11.7 million in revenue in 2008. AST says the acquisition allows it to quickly expand its software and network services business and create an effective, new integrated delivery structure in the Company’s new Network Intelligence business.

Sykesville -- GSE Systems, a provider of real-time simulation and training solutions to the power industry, reported that it had priced an offering to sell 2,500,000 shares of its common stock at a public offering price of $6.00 per share. The Company expects the offering will yield net proceeds, before expenses, of $14,100,000 and intends to use the net proceeds for general working capital purposes and to fund acquisitions and other strategic opportunities. - Tecore System Prevents Unauthorized Cell Phone Use in Prison

Columbia -- Tecore Networks, a supplier of mobile network infrastructure, reported that it conducted a test of its Intelligent Network Access Controller (iNAC) to show that it prevented contraband cell phone use by inmates in prison. The test was done with Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, and featured controlled tests of call and text message blocking, 911 call completion and lawful intercept. The tests were completed for each of the top four U.S. commercial carriers, highlighting the iNAC’s multi-technology capabilities.

- Central MD Applies for $100M in Stimulus Funds for Fiber Network

Ellicott City -- The “One Maryland” group, led by Howard County, has submitted an application, known as the One Maryland Broadband (OMB), to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration for $100 million of federal stimulus money set-aside for fiber optic projects. Members of the group consists of all of the central Maryland counties: Baltimore, Howard, Anne Arundel, Harford, Carroll, Prince George’s, Montgomery and Frederick, plus Baltimore City and Annapolis. The project will create a fiber optic network interconnecting over 800 community institutions across central Maryland in one contiguous local government network across the State. The benefits of this interconnection are numerous and substantial, especially as they relate to sharing resources and knowledge among public schools, libraries and public safety entities.

- GSE to Build Plant Simulator for Westinghouse Nuclear Plants

Sykesville -- GSE Systems, a provider of real-time simulation to the power industry, said that it received a multi-million dollar contract from Westinghouse Electric to build an AP1000 nuclear power plant simulator based upon Westinghouse’s design for domestic customers. The simulators will be used by Westinghouse to demonstrate the plant design and control room human factors. The models that will be built in this current phase will be largely common to all future US-based AP1000 plants. The Westinghouse AP1000 design is currently speced in 14 announced US nuclear power plants. GSE expects to receive an order for a simulator for each of these plants.

Annapolis -- PharmAthene, a developer of medical countermeasures against biological and chemical threats, last week announced that it has closed on the issuance of 2-year, 10% unsecured senior convertible notes and common stock purchase warrants in a private placement of approximately $19.3 million. The placement gives the company $10.5 in new cash and has exchanged of about $8.8 million of notes issued in 2007. The Company plans to use the proceeds to repay old notes and for working capital.

- Vorbeck Materials Receives $5.1 Million Financing

Jessup -- Vorbeck Materials, a developer and manufacturer of solutions using graphene, reported last week that it has received $5.1 million in funding. The financing was led by Stoneham Partners, with contributions from the Maryland Department for Business and Economic Development (DBED) and a syndicate of individual investors. The company will use the funds to expand development of its Vor-x graphene and Vor-ink conductive inks for printed electronics applications. In conjunction with the funding the Honorable Kristen L. Silverberg, former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, and Dr. Robert G. Hirsch, former Global Managing Director for DuPont’s Intellectual Assets Business and Corporate New Ventures have joined Vorbeck's board.

Linthicum -- Ciena reported last week that its Carrier Ethernet Service Delivery (CESD) platforms are providing the backhaul solution for Clearwire’s CLEAR 4G mobile WiMAX service in Las Vegas. Clearwire is launching a nationwide WiMAX service with the Ciena equipment with deployments already in Baltimore, Atlanta and Portland. In Las Vegas, the service is available to 1.7 million people across 638 square miles. WiMAX typically offers download speeds of 3 to 6 Mbps, significantly more than today’s wireless broadband data services.

- Merkle Launches Mobile Marketing Practice

Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing firm, said that it has formed a new mobile marketing practice that will focus on developing mobile campaigns for clients across a wide range of vertical markets. Merkle said it is formalizing its new practice in response to skyrocketing interest in mobile marketing, which is expected to grow to $5.7 billion by the year 2014. - BGE Announces Plans for Installing 2 Million Smart Meters

Baltimore -- Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) said last week that it has filed a plan with the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) to install as many as 2 million smart meters, after the success of its pilot program it started last year. BGE claims the program, which is based on a two-way communications network, will save customers as much as $2.6 billion over the life of the project. The pilot program proved that customers can reduce electricity usage by about a third during peak periods. BGE is planning on using stimulus dollars to help fund the project. Participating residential customers reduced their consumption during peak periods by 26 percent to 37 percent, saved more than $100 on average and gave the program a 93 percent satisfaction rating.

- Merkle’s CognitiveDATA to Acquire CMS Direct

Columbia -- Merkle, a database marketing agency, announced last week that its wholly owned subsidiary CognitiveDATA is acquiring the Minneapolis-based catalog marketing services firm CMS Direct. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. CognitiveDATA and CMS Direct began a strategic partnership in 2006 to develop technology that combines address hygiene and advanced merge-purge services into a single, streamlined process. The merger will enable CognitiveDATA to completely integrate its proprietary data accuracy technology with the database and list processing solutions offered by CMS Direct.

- MAGPI Deploys Ciena to Networking Links for Federal Research Labs

Linthicum -- Ciena reported last week that MAGPI (Mid-Atlantic Gigapop for Internet2), an Information Systems and Computing organization at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, has implemented a network based on the CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform. The system supports MAGPI's high performance network connectivity among multiple research labs located at Princeton University and the U.S. Department of Energy. Columbia -- Arbitron has issued a statement saying that it welcomes discussion with Congress on the impact of the introduction of the Portable People Meter (PPM) on radio listening estimates. The PPM electronic measurement service is currently used in markets to gather detailed information on radio listening habits.

- Census Bureau Opens Data Processing Center in Essex

Essex -- The U.S. Census Bureau and Lockheed Martin have opened a new facility in Baltimore County, to support the data processing efforts required for the 2010 Census. More than 2,500 people will work in the 236,500-square-foot facility in Essex. They will be supporting a broad spectrum of services related to 2010 Census data processing efforts. The facility will be operated by Lockheed Martin's subcontract partner, CSC, who will also manage the hiring efforts for the 2,500 new employees.

Baltimore -- ABS Capital Partners, a later-stage venture capital firm, last week said that it closed its sixth fund, ABS VI, at $420 million. The fund has already invested in four companies to date: Zoom Media, a targeted and digital out of home media company; Liquidity Services, a former ABS Capital portfolio company and a online auction marketplace for wholesale surplus and salvage assets; O4, a provider of mobile sales force automation solutions; and Tarpon Towers, a wireless communications tower company. ABS Capital has now raised more than $2 billion since its founding in 1990.

- The Orioles Go 3-D with Virtual Website

Baltimore -- The Baltimore Orioles have deployed virtual 3-D geospatial visualization technology on its website. - Battelle Wins $29 Million Five-year Homeland Security Contract

Aberdeen -- Battelle said that it was one of two companies awarded an potential $94 million contract with Homeland Security. The initial contract to Battelle was $29 million over a five-year period. Under the contract, Battelle will support all Homeland Security National Infrastructure Coordination Center (NICC) Watch locations and the Office of Infrastructure Protection Incident Management Cell. - NEA Moving from Baltimore to Timonium, Citing Crime as Cause

Baltimore -- In an email sent to Mayor Dixon last week, venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates, said it is moving its offices out of Baltimore because of crime. NEA, originally based in Baltimore, has offices on St Paul Street near the Belvedere Hotel. While it's not clear to this publication why NEA even wrote this email, NEA said that the neighborhood will lose $200,000 annually in revenue. NEA says that over the last several years many of its employees cars have been broken into, some have been robbed at gun point, and employees have been menaced by homeless people.

- Prism Microsystems Commits to Common Criteria Certification

Columbia -- Prism Microsystems said that it has begun the process of achieving Common Criteria certification at Evaluation Assurance Level 2+ for EventTracker, its SIEM (Security Information and Event Log Management) solution. Common Criteria is an international framework for evaluating security capabilities and features of commercial technology products. It is accepted by 25 countries through the CCRA (Common Criteria Recognition Agreement), including the United States Government which requires federal agencies to procure only those commercial security products that have been tested by an accredited laboratory.

- Ciena Chosen for New Telehouse Data Center

Linthicum -- Ciena reported last week that its CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform was selected by Telehouse Europe to enable connectivity for the new Telehouse 3 data storage facility near Paris. Established in 1988 and owned by Japanese service provider KDDI, Telehouse Europe offers data center facilities and connectivity, for mission critical IT systems, to more than 800 customers. Ciena’s CN 4200 is deployed in a point-to-point optical network with protection routes, seamlessly connecting Telehouse 3 with the Voltaire facility in central Paris.

Baltimore -- Davis Calibration, a provider of calibration of test, measurement and control instrumentation, has released FastQuote 2.0, a new version of its cost estimating tool for calibration services. The new version contains calibration information on more than 48,000 instruments from thousands of manufacturers. The number of steps to complete a quote request was reduced by two-thirds (66%) and the overall speed of the application is greatly increased compared to the previous version.

- 38 Studios Acquires Big Huge Games

Timonium -- Shortly after announcing plans to shut down Timonium-based Big Huge Games, if it could not find a buyer, THQ has sold the company to MA-based 38 Studios. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Big Huge Games was founded in 2000 by veteran game developers Brian Reynolds, Jason Coleman, Dave Inscore, and Tim Train. Award-winning lead designer Ken Rolston, a 25-year role-playing game designer and co-creator of Oblivion and Morrowind, is another vital and dynamic component in BHG's success. 38 Studios was founded by former Red Sox pitcher Curt Shilling, who is Chairman. The Big Huge Games team will be integrated into 38 Studios but remain based in Timonium.

- Alabanza Acquirer Settles Class-action Lawsuit

Baltimore -- An article in the Daily News Record reported that NaviSite, that company that acquired Baltimore-based Alabanza two years ago, has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit brought on by more than 5,500 of its clients who experienced long service interruptions as a result of a botched server migration. The settlement of $1.67 million, will refund clients four times their monthly bills. In addition to the refund checks, the Boca Raton law firm who handled the suit will be paid nearly a half million dollars. The trouble began on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, when NaviSite unplugged some of Alabanza’s servers and attempted to move them by truck to Massachusetts. Nearly 200,000 Web sites were affected.

- Rivers Casino Debuts in Pittsburgh with MICROS's HMS

Columbia -- MICROS Systems, a supplier of IT to the hospitality industry, reported that Rivers Casino has selected the MICROS 9700 Hospitality Management System (HMS) and other MICROS modules. Rivers Casino will go live with the complete solution in August 2009. The entertainment facility is in Pittsburgh near Heinz Field and PNC Park. It features 3,000 slot machines, five restaurants and entertainment.MICROS 9700 HMS was selected after its success was proven in a sister property, the Riverwalk Casino.

Baltimore -- The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business said that it has acquired new space at the University of Maryland BioPark in Baltimore. The Smith School signed a long-term lease to occupy 14,127 square feet in BioPark Two of the biomedical research park,, giving it more than four times its current space in Baltimore. The new space will include technology-equipped classrooms, team break-out rooms, staff offices, a conference room, a small computer lab and a lounge area. The school plans to use the space to expand its MBA programs and partnerships, and to include dedicated space for alumni offerings in Baltimore.
